O mundo artístico atual é extremamente rico de novos artistas que não se intimidam em criar algo que foge do usual. São muitas referências que, combinadas com muito talento, geram maravilhosos resultados. Filmes, músicas, grafites, quadros, eventos, palestras e tudo mais que a arte faz parte de alguma maneira.
Today, in the artistic world, we have a lot of artists who doesn’t have the courage to create innovative art. There are a few exceptions that combines talent, playfulness and creativeness in an extra ordinary way which leads to wonderful artistic results. This involves different areas within the arts such as movies, music, graffiti, paints and workshops.
Ressaltando a parte música, a experimentação é um ingrediente que, em muitos casos, é fundamental para que uma nova banda e/ou artista seja de excelente qualidade. Este é o caso da dupla sueca Birch and Meadow.
Emphasizing the music art, the experimental sounds capes is an essential ingredient for new artists / groups to reach new peaks of perhaps a deeper musical and emotional expression. This is the case of the Swedish Folk-Drone band; Birch and Meadow.
O Birch and Meadow foi formado em 2012 por David Wenngren e Sara Forslund. Sara contribui com sua bela e serena voz e David com seus arranjos, que parecem vindos de uma psicodélica e melancólica viagem poética, que resulta em um som experimental muito competente.
Birch and Meadow was formed in 2012 by David Wenngren and Sara Forslund. Sara contributes with a mesmerizing, whispering voice and David with haunting sounds capes, which sounds like a psychedelic, melancholy and poetic journey. The result is an amazing experimental music experience.
David e Sara seguem outros projetos musicais fora do Birch and Meadow. Ele com o Library Tapes (confira clicando aqui) e ela com sua carreira solo. Sara termina seu primeiro álbum (Water Became Wild) ainda este ano, no inverno. O Birch and Meadow já lançou seu primeiro disco, o Butterflies Graves. The Birch and Meadow members also have other musical projects on the side. Birch and Meadow has already released their first album; “Butterflies and graves” at Time Released Sound in 2013. To talk about them is a big step for the blog and besides the fact that they are great artists, they are also the first foreign band to give an interview for Artescétera. Check the interview bellow:
1- Conte-nos como foi o inicio do Birch e Meadow. Como vocês se conheceram e como surgiu a ideia de montar a dupla. (Tell us how and when Birch and Meadow started, how you first met and where the idea to start the band.)
Sara: Eu e David nos conhecemos através de uma amiga em 2011. Ela me falou sobre ele e seu projeto musical, o Murralin Lane, então fiquei curiosa e entrei em contato com ele. Naquela época, estava cansada das minhas músicas e de toda aquela coisa de compor e cantar. Eu não escrevia uma música nova há alguns anos. Então pensei que a solução era mergulhar em algo totalmente diferente e desconhecido para encontrar novas inspirações. E eu estava certa.
Sara: We meet through a friend of ours around 2011 and she told me about David and another music project of his, Murralin Lane, and I guess I got curious and I got in contact with David. At that time I was tired of my own songs and the whole sing songwriter thing. I had not written any new songs in a couple of years. I thought that sometimes the answer can be to dive into something totally different/unknown to find new inspiration and I was right.
2- O som de vocês é muito diferente. Quais são as influências da dupla? (Your music is very different (in the good way). What are your references?)
Sara: Eu não ouvia muita música eletrônica antes de conhecer David, o mais perto de eletrônico que ouvia era Moby. Então minhas referências são na maioria cantores / compositores como Tim Buclkey, Nick Drake, Sophie Zelmani, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithful, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, etc. Hoje, eu tento acrescentar mais em minha música e há até alguns toques experimentais no meu álbum (solo), que chegará no próximo inverno.
Sara: As for me I have not really listened to electronic music before I got in touch with David, the closest thing I guess would be Moby. So my references are mostly from sing songwriters such as Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Sophie Zelmani, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithful, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan etc. Nowadays I try to include it more in my own music and there are a few experimental touches on my own album that´s coming out this winter. I have realized what a rich world the electronic/experimental music world is.
David: Além de Murralin Lane, eu acho que o Grouper, talvez, pode ser uma boa referência.
David; Besides Murralin Lane I think Grouper could be a good reference perhaps.
3- O Brasil é um país que tem muitos gêneros musicais predominantes, como o samba, MPB, entre outros. Qual música é predominante na Suécia? (In Brazil we have some musicals genres predominant, like Samba and MPB. Which music is predominant in Sweden?)
Sara: Acho que o David pode responder melhor esta. Eu não tenho ideia, meu palpite são bandas de dance music, ou talvez pop e metal?
Sara: I think David should answer this question. I have no idea, but my guess is dance bands music, then maybe pop and metal?
David: Acho que é bem relativo. Há muitos produtores, artistas terríveis no mainstream, mas também, muitas bandas e artistas indies bons.
David: I think that’s fairly accurate. There’s lots of producers/artists making terrible mainstream pop, but also quite a lot of good indie bands and artists.
4- Vocês conhecem alguma música e/ou banda brasileira? Se sim, qual? (Do you know any Brazilian song or band?)
Sara: Não, mas por favor, me dê algumas dicas!
Sara: No, but please give me tips!
David: Tem um cara chamado Andrei Machado, que faz composições minimalistas modernas e clássicas.Além dele, não tenho muito conhecimento de música brasileira. O que eu tenho em mente é Sepultura e Heitor Villa-Lobos.
David: There’s a guy called Andrei Machado that’s making some really nice minimal modern classical compositions. Besides him my knowledge of Brazilian music isn’t the greatest either I’m afraid. All I can think of is Sepultura and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
5- Por aqui não é fácil viver só de música. Muitos artistas, principalmente novos, precisam trabalhar em outro lugar para poder viver. Vocês tem outro trabalho além do Birch and Meadow? (It’s not so easy to live on music around here. Many artists, mainly the new ones, have to work in parallel with the band to make a living. Do you have a parallel job besides the band?)
Sara: Sim,eu trabalho integral na empresa dos meus irmãos (suplementos alimentares). Há uma expressão sueca, “Skam den som ger sig”, que significa “vergonhoso se você desistir!”. Eu acho que há muita pressão em viver totalmente voltado só para música. Às vezes, eu digo para mim mesma que os esforços e obstáculos, podem fazer você e sua música serem mais íntegros e persistentes.
Sara: Yes I work fulltime at my brothers company (food supplements etc) There is an expression in Sweden called “Skam den som ger sig” which means shame on you if you give up! I guess there can also be a lot of pressure connected to living completely on your music. Sometimes I tell myself that struggles and obstacles can make give your music and also yourself more integrity and perseverance.
David: Eu tenho vivido da minha música, mas está ficando cada vez mais difícil vender CD’s / downloads e fazer turnês. Recentemente eu comecei a trabalhar como ?? para uma empresa na Inglaterra, trabalhando com sincronia em trailers, propagandas e filmes / TV. Espero gerar um pouco de dinheiro também.
David: I’ve been living of my music for some time, but it’s getting harder and harder to sell cd’s/downloads and to tour. I recently started working as an A&R for a company in England that’s working with syncs for Trailers, ads and film/TV, so hopefully that will generate a bit of money as well.
6- Em quais tipos de lugares vocês costumam tocar? Já tocaram fora da Suécia? (What kind of places are you used to playing? Have you ever played out of Sweden?)
Sara: Falando da minha carreira solo, eu tenho tocado em cafes, pubs e nas ruas da Suécia, Reino Unido (Glasgow), Australia e Nova Zelandia. Eu também tenho feito algumas apresentações em cadeias da Suécia, quero explorar mais este “point”. O Birch and Meadow não tocou fora da Suécia, mas acho que adoraríamos fazer no futuro.
Sara: When it comes to my own music I have played on cafes, pubs and on the streets of Sweden, United Kingdom (Glasgow), Australia and New Zealand. I have also done a few prison gigs in Sweden which is a venue I want to explore more. Birch and Meadow has not played outside Sweden yet, but I guess that is something we would love to do in the future.
David: Eu tenho viajado bastante com o Library Tapes e tenho tocado bastante na Europa Ocidental, Japão e Estados Unidos. Os lugares vão desde cafes, bares de pop rock, auditórios e igrejas.
David: I’ve toured quite a bit with Library Tapes and have played in most of western Europe and also in Japan and the U.S. The venues have ranged from cafés and standard pop/rock venues to auditoriums and churches.
7- Mesmo cedo para falar, já pensam em lançar um novo álbum? (Do you think about releasing a new album or it’s early to talk about it?)
Sara: Sim, nós conversamos sobre isso. Nós acabamos de lançar o EP digital Black Birds. Eu também estou gravando meu álbum solo, o Water Became Wild, neste inverno. Mas depois disso, eu acho que vamos começar nosso segundo álbum, talvez em 2015.
Sara: Yes we have talked about that. We just released a new digital EP “Black Birds”. I am also going to release my own solo album “Water Became wild” this winter but after that I think we might start on our second album perhaps during 2015.
8- O Artescétera é um blog que defende e divulga todos os tipos de arte (música, cinema, fotografia, artes plásticas, etc). Para finalizar a entrevista, gostaria que vocês deixassem uma mensagem para os leitores do blog, defendendo o porquê a arte é tão importante (qual a diferença que ela faz) na vida das pessoas. (Atescetéra is a blog who defends and disclosure every kind of art (music, movies, photos, graffits, etc). To end the interview, I’d like you send a message to the blog’s readers, supporting why art is so important in people ‘s life.)
Sara: Para mim, arte é a maneira de conectar pessoas de diferentes partes e situações do mundo. A arte nos da conforto em tempos difíceis, assim como um quente cobertor. Acho que a verdadeira arte, descobre algo que foi escondido e nos diz coisas novas e frescas sobre nós mesmos e sobre o mundo. Não é necessário ter as respostas, mas sim, ter coragem de fazer as perguntas. Uma das minhas compositoras favoritas, Sophie Zelmani, disse uma vez “Sem música (arte), eu não saberia o que estou sentindo”. Acho que está é uma boa maneira de expressar (meu sentimento pela arte).
Sara: As for me I think art is a way of connecting people from different parts and situations of the world. Art gives us comfort through hard times like a warm blanket. I think that true art discovers something that´s been unfold/hidden and tells us something new and fresh about ourselves and the world. It does not necessary have to give us the answers but it has the courage to ask the questions. One of my favorite sing songwriters Sophie Zelmani once said “Without music (art) I would not know what I am feeling” I think that´s a good way of putting it.
